It was an emotional start to the postseason in D.C. last night. The nations capital would undergo trauma early in the first inning of the National Leauge Wild Card game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Winner takes all, and advances to play the Los Angeles Dodgers later this week.
Here’s how it went down… The Nationals started with 7-time All Star, Max Scherzer pitching and he didn’t quite handle the task well. He walked the lead off batter to start the game, and allowed a homer by the second batter Yasmani Grandal.
This 2-0 lead by the Brewers devastated the home fans as they looked on with low spirits. Then Scherzer allowed another home run in the second inning by first baseman, Eric Thames.
At this point the Brewers looked like they were on a roll and would easily snatch the Wild Card win from the Nats… until the bottom of the third.
Nationals short stop Trea Turner, hit a home run to put his boys on the board and give D.C. hope.
The game was virtually quiet otherwise. The home plate umpire was hit by a foul tip, but no concussion protocol? A few reviews by the umpire staff on close plays at first base and another ball that hit a Nationals batter.
Until it happened… the unthinkable. The Nationals had two men on base and two outs in the bottom of the 8th. It seemed like either a big opportunity was on the way, or the beginning of the Nats stand would start filing out of the stadium.
MVP candidate was up to the plate. Anthony Rendon was walked and fans began to throw water, beer and any other liquid nearby.
The stadium was electric and the next batter up was 20 year old Juan Soto. The left batter would place his pop up just in front of Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun, who committed an error on the play. This error allowed 3 runners to come home and the Nationals to take the lead 4-3.
Soto was eventually tagged out between 2nd and 3rd base, but the damage was done. Milwaukee had no answers in the top of the 9th and D.C. would go home empty Handed. The Nationals will face the Dodgers in LA on Thursday October 3, 2019. The game will air on TBS at 8:30 PM.
